Buying Slow Match
I know of three places to buy slow match online.
- First, I am now selling matchcord to the public. It's $4.00 per 5' up to 50 feet, length, $3.00 per 5 feet up to 149 feet, and $80.00 for 150'. It's 6mm (about 1/4") 3-strand hemp, and burns about 9 minutes per inch. If you'd like to buy some, send e-mail to crossbow42@aol.com. The price includes shipping to anywhere in the U. S. Outside the U. S., well, let me know and we'll figure it out.
- Dixie Gun Works also sells slow match. As of this writing (January 2010) I have not tried their product, but based on their description an reviews it seems to be fine stuff, and behave rather like the cotton match I used to make. In addition:
- It's 3/16" braided cotton. This is too small for most matchlocks, but fine for setting off cannons.
- Because it's cotton, it burns faster than my hemp, at 5 minutes per inch (which was the same speed my cotton match burned).
- At $3.50 for 12' it's considerably less expensive than mine, but the $9.95 shipping and handling kinda offsets that except for large orders.
- Another place to buy cotton matchcord is G. Gedney Godwin, Inc.
It's $7.50 per 6' (2m) (as of this writing), 1/2 inch, which is a bit big for most matchlocks, but if your serpentine opens that wide it ought to work fine.
So, hey, it's still a free country (as of this writing) and you've got choices!
